On Thursday evening, Citizen TV’s popular show "News Gang" turned into an unexpected comedy when the academic qualifications of Hassan Joho, former governor of Mombasa, were discussed.

The show’s hosts—Sam Gituku, Linus Kaikai, and Yvonne Okwara—couldn't help but laugh when they came across Joho’s controversial academic background.

The News Gang show, known for dissecting political issues, was evaluating the latest Cabinet nominees proposed by President William Ruto.

The President had recently named ten new nominees, adding to the already announced members of his National Executive. Notably, four of these nominees were from the opposition’s ODM party, including prominent figures like John Mbadi and Hassan Joho.

Sam Gituku took on the task of discussing the academic qualifications of each nominee. Things were going smoothly until he reached Joho.

Unlike the other nominees, Joho’s academic background was not straightforward. Gituku found himself stumbling over Joho’s credentials, which appeared to be incomplete or controversial.

This led to an amusing moment as his co-hosts, Linus Kaikai and Yvonne Okwara, began to chuckle, and eventually, Gituku couldn’t hold back his laughter either.

Hassan Joho’s academic qualifications have been a topic of debate for years. Some people have claimed that he fraudulently obtained his degree.

According to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), Joho sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1993 and scored a mean grade of D- (minus). He attended Serani Secondary School.

In 2008, Joho enrolled in a pre-university certificate course at Kampala University in Uganda.

He later pursued a diploma in human resource management at the same university and eventually earned a degree.

Additionally, Joho has a degree from Gretsa University. There have been allegations that he used a forged result slip, showing a mean grade of C+ in 1992, to gain admission to the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

As Gituku tried to navigate Joho’s credentials, he initially attempted to fill the gaps by mentioning Joho’s political career.

This attempt, however, led to more laughter from his colleagues. The laughter became contagious, and Gituku found himself in an awkward position, torn between maintaining his composure and joining in.

Ultimately, he gave in and laughed along with Kaikai and Okwara, creating a light-hearted moment on live TV.

President William Ruto's list of nominees included several key figures from the ODM party. John Mbadi was nominated to head the National Treasury Ministry.

Hassan Joho was proposed for the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy. Wycliffe Oparanya was chosen for the Ministry of Co-Operatives, and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi was nominated for the Ministry of Energy.

If Raila Odinga had won the 2022 presidential election, Joho would have been the Cabinet Secretary for Lands.

Other notable appointments in Raila’s hypothetical government included Wycliffe Oparanya as the National Treasury CS and Peter Munya as the Agriculture CS. Kalonzo Musyoka was set to be the Chief Cabinet Secretary.

The News Gang show airs on Thursdays and features a panel of Citizen TV's seasoned journalists who discuss political matters of national importance.

The show is co-hosted by Sam Gituku, Linus Kaikai, and Yvonne Okwara, who bring their expertise and unique perspectives to the table.

On this particular Thursday, the show took a humorous turn, providing viewers with an unexpected and entertaining segment.
