Julius Mwangi, the father of Joseph "Jowie" Irungu, died on June 15, 2024, at Nakuru Level Five Hospital Annex after battling cancer for months. He was 64 years old.

Mwangi spent his final days longing for the release of his son, who is serving a sentence for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

Jowie Irungu’s conviction has deeply affected his family, particularly his father. Mwangi believed his son was innocent and that the real perpetrators of the crime were still at large.

Despite his efforts to support Jowie during the trial, the father’s health worsened, and he spent his last moments yearning to see his son free.

According to Jowie’s sister, Jane Irungu, their father was heartbroken over Jowie's imprisonment. He often cried and expressed his wish to visit Jowie in Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Jane shared that their father had even insisted on being taken to the prison, hoping for a final meeting with his son.

The family's grief was compounded by their belief that Jowie was framed, and the actual killers were never brought to justice.

Mwangi frequently lamented the portrayal of his son in the media, feeling that the narrative was manipulated to protect the true culprits and tarnish Jowie’s image.

Annastacia Thaama, Jowie’s mother, recounted how they had planned to transfer Mwangi to a hospital in Nairobi for better treatment.

Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away before they could proceed with the move.

Mwangi’s passing leaves behind a grieving family, including his widow and four children. In light of his death, the family has requested that Jowie be allowed to attend his father’s funeral, even if it means being accompanied by police officers.

Jowie’s lawyer, Andrew Muge, is currently exploring legal options to facilitate his client's attendance at the burial.

Jowie's conviction and his father's subsequent death have been a double blow to the family, who continue to hope for justice and Jowie's eventual release.

The family remains united in their support for Jowie, despite the hardships they have faced and continue to face in their quest for his freedom.
