Malawi is mourning the loss of four lives, including that of a pregnant woman, in a heartbreaking incident during the funeral procession of Vice-President Saulos Chilima.
The convoy, solemnly carrying Chilima's body from Lilongwe to his hometown of Ntcheu, encountered a devastating accident that has left the nation in sorrow.
Vice-President Saulos Chilima tragically passed away in a plane crash alongside nine other officials just days before this incident. As Malawi prepared to bid farewell to their leader, the procession faced unexpected turmoil.
Mourners gathered along the route clashed with police, seeking to pay their respects. Amidst the commotion, some individuals threw stones at government vehicles, resulting in a fatal outcome.
One of the vehicles in the convoy veered off the road and struck bystanders who were gathered nearby. This horrific accident claimed the lives of four people, among them a pregnant woman.
Additionally, twelve others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals for urgent medical care.
Today, on Monday, June 17, Malawi is somber as it prepares to lay Vice-President Chilima to rest. President Lazarus Chakwera paid tribute to Chilima, describing him as a patriot and a collaborator who had served the nation diligently over the past four years.
As the country mourns the loss of Vice-President Saulos Chilima, the focus remains on honoring his memory and ensuring that such accidents do not recur in future funeral processions.
The government and authorities are called upon to review safety measures and crowd control protocols to prevent similar tragedies.
In this time of grief, Malawi stands united in honoring Vice-President Chilima's legacy and offering condolences to the families affected by this tragic event.
