In just eight hours, Kenyans united to raise over Ksh. 2 million to support the families of Rex Kanyike and Evans Kiratu. These two young men tragically lost their lives during recent protests in Nairobi.
Rex was fatally shot by police during the Occupy Parliament demonstrations, while Evans succumbed to injuries caused by a teargas canister.
The fundraising effort was organized by a group of activists on a platform known as "X". Led by Kimuzi, Osama Otero, and Hanifa Adan, the initiative quickly gained momentum.
They set up a fundraiser on M-CHANGA early Sunday morning, appealing to fellow Kenyans for contributions to cover the funeral expenses of Rex and Evans.
Moved by the heartbreaking circumstances, Kenyans responded swiftly and generously. Many shared screenshots of their donations on social media, encouraging others to contribute.
The initial goal of Ksh. 2 million was surpassed within the first eight hours, demonstrating the power of collective action and compassion in the face of tragedy.
Kimuzi, one of the organizers, expressed gratitude on social media, declaring the achievement as a moment of unity and strength for Kenya. He emphasized that despite the challenges, the community's support has been overwhelming and unstoppable.
Osama Otero also shared his appreciation online, confirming the successful completion of the fundraiser with a simple yet powerful message: "DONE!"
Beyond financial support, plans are underway for a mass turnout at Rex and Evans' funerals. Many Kenyans are determined not only to honor their memory but also to send a strong message of solidarity and accountability to the country's leadership.
As preparations continue for the funerals, the legacy of Rex and Evans lives on in the hearts of their fellow Kenyans, who have shown that even in grief, unity and compassion can prevail.
