President William Ruto has announced the nomination of 11 new cabinet secretaries.
This reshuffle comes after days of extensive consultations with both his allies in the government and the opposition.
Aden Duale, who previously served as the Defence Cabinet Secretary, has been nominated once again to head the Ministry of Defence.
Duale expressed his gratitude to President Ruto and the Kenyan people for their continued trust in his capabilities. In a message shared on his social media account,
Duale stated, “I extend my deepest gratitude to H.E. President William Ruto for nominating me as Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Defence.
This nomination is a reflection of the President’s and the Kenyans' profound trust and confidence in my ability to advance the nation’s agenda.”
Duale also emphasized his readiness to face the vetting process by the National Assembly's relevant committee, expressing confidence in his ability to meet the public's expectations.
He quoted a verse from the Quran, “So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me,” to show his commitment and gratitude.
President Ruto’s nominations are seen as a balanced mix of continuity and fresh perspectives. Alongside Duale, Kithure Kindiki has been nominated as the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Alice Wahome for Lands, and Soipan Tuya for Environment. Each of these individuals brings a wealth of experience and expertise to their respective roles, aiming to tackle the pressing challenges facing their sectors.
Davis Chirchir, who has been nominated for the Roads and Transport position, brings his experience in infrastructure development, which is crucial for Kenya’s economic growth. Rebecca Miano, previously the Trade Cabinet Secretary, has been nominated as the Attorney General, a role that requires a deep understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks. Miano's appointment is expected to strengthen the legal and justice system in the country.
The Health Ministry will see a new face with Debra Mlongo Barasa, who has been tasked with addressing the ongoing health challenges, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and improving the healthcare infrastructure.
Julius Migos Ogamba has been nominated as the Education Cabinet Secretary, a position that is critical for shaping the future of Kenya’s youth and addressing issues such as curriculum reforms and educational accessibility.
Andrew Mwihia Karanja, nominated for Agriculture, is expected to bring innovative solutions to one of Kenya’s most vital sectors. Agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy, and Karanja’s role will be pivotal in ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Eric Muriithi Muuga has been nominated for the Water Ministry, tasked with addressing water scarcity and ensuring equitable distribution of this essential resource.
Margaret Nyambura Ndung'u, nominated for the ICT Ministry, is set to drive Kenya’s digital transformation. Her role will involve enhancing the country’s technological infrastructure, promoting digital literacy, and ensuring that Kenya keeps pace with global technological advancements.
During the announcement at State House, President Ruto highlighted the importance of these nominations in propelling Kenya’s development agenda.
He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the nominated individuals’ ability to deliver on their mandates. “Further consultations are ongoing, after which I will announce more names in due course,” Ruto stated, indicating that this is just the first phase of his cabinet restructuring.
The nominations have elicited mixed reactions from various quarters. Political analysts suggest that President Ruto’s choices reflect a strategic balance aimed at fostering unity and inclusivity.
By incorporating experienced leaders alongside new faces, Ruto appears to be building a team capable of addressing both ongoing and emerging challenges.
Supporters of the nominated individuals have praised the President’s selections, highlighting the nominees' proven track records and commitment to public service.
For instance, Duale’s reappointment has been lauded for his previous contributions to national security. His experience and understanding of the Defence Ministry’s dynamics are seen as crucial for maintaining and enhancing Kenya’s security apparatus.
On the other hand, some critics have called for thorough vetting processes to ensure that the nominees are not only qualified but also free from any potential conflicts of interest or past controversies. The vetting process by the National Assembly’s committees is expected to be rigorous, with a focus on transparency and accountability.
