On July 23, 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summoned Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, to appear at their headquarters in Nairobi.

The DCI has asked Owino to report to them on July 24 at 9 a.m. The investigation is centered on allegations of police incitement and money laundering.

The DCI’s summons to Owino is part of a broader investigation. According to the notice, Owino is expected to provide crucial information related to these allegations.

The letter from the DCI reads, “I request you, Babu Owino, to report to me at the DCI headquarters, Nairobi County Police Station on July 24 at 09:00 hours, midday and furnish me with full information concerning the case.” The letter also warns that failure to comply with this request could result in legal action.

Upon receiving the summons, Babu Owino took to his social media accounts to express his frustration. He criticized the move, calling it “total madness” and questioning the motives behind the investigation.

Owino’s reaction reflects his ongoing tension with the current political climate and his outspoken criticism of President William Ruto’s administration.

The timing of this investigation is significant. On July 22, 2024, Owino publicly criticized President Ruto during a speech in Homa Bay County.

He accused the President of incompetence and voiced strong support for the youth who have been protesting against the government.

Owino’s comments came amidst ongoing anti-government demonstrations, which have led to several deaths and injuries. He has been a vocal advocate for the protesters, blaming the state for what he describes as negligence and mishandling of the situation.

Owino’s criticism of President Ruto has been sharp and direct. In his public address, he highlighted the difference between the President’s leadership and the actions of the young protesters.

“To the Gen Zs of this country, we are proud, we love what you are doing and we know the difference between President William Ruto and the Gen Zs,” Owino said.

He further emphasized that significant changes often require breaking from the status quo, adding, “Tomorrow we have a date with destiny and for something good to happen, something must break.”

The DCI’s investigation into Owino is part of a larger trend of scrutiny facing political figures who oppose the current administration.

The investigation into allegations of police incitement and money laundering is particularly serious, as these charges could have significant legal and political consequences.

The DCI’s actions reflect the heightened tension in Kenya’s political environment, where public criticism of the government is often met with intense scrutiny.

Owino’s situation has drawn attention from both supporters and critics. Supporters view the summons as a politically motivated attempt to silence a vocal critic of the government.

They argue that the investigation is a response to Owino’s outspoken views and his support for the ongoing protests. Critics, on the other hand, believe that the investigation is necessary to address serious allegations and ensure accountability.

The political climate in Kenya has been increasingly polarized, with sharp divisions between supporters of President Ruto and those who oppose his administration.

The DCI’s investigation into Babu Owino adds to this tension, highlighting the challenges faced by political leaders who speak out against the government.

The outcome of this investigation will likely have significant implications for both Owino and the broader political landscape in Kenya.
