On July 25, 2024, Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), addressed the recent cabinet nominations made by President William Ruto.

Ruto's appointment of four ODM members to his cabinet has raised many questions about the political implications of these nominations.

Despite the prominent positions given to ODM members, Odinga wants to make it clear that there is no formal coalition agreement between ODM and Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

President Ruto's cabinet reshuffle includes four ODM members in key positions. Hassan Joho, a prominent ODM leader and former Mombasa Governor, has been nominated for the position of Cabinet Secretary for Mining.

Wycliffe Oparanya, the former Kakamega Governor and a senior ODM member, has been nominated for the role of Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives.

John Mbadi, who has been a significant figure in ODM and a former Member of Parliament, is set to take up the position of Cabinet Secretary for Treasury. Opiyo Wandayi, another key ODM leader and former MP, has been nominated as Cabinet Secretary for Energy.

In his response to these nominations, Raila Odinga emphasized that ODM and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party have not entered into any formal coalition agreement with President Ruto’s party.

He pointed out that the nominations were made without a formal alliance being established between ODM and UDA. Odinga reiterated this point in his statement, underscoring that the appointments were not part of any political deal or agreement.

Odinga acknowledged the competence of the individuals nominated. He expressed his belief that these nominees have the capability to contribute positively to Kenya’s growth.

“We extend our best wishes to the nominees and trust that they will contribute positively to national development,” Odinga stated.

Despite his positive remarks about the nominees, he made it clear that this does not imply any formal political partnership with Ruto's administration.

Alongside his comments on the cabinet nominations, Odinga also highlighted several pressing issues that he believes need urgent attention.

He has been a vocal advocate for a national dialogue, which he feels is essential to address the concerns raised by Kenyans during recent protests. Odinga has called for the government to expedite this dialogue to tackle key issues affecting the nation.

1. Compensation for Victims: Odinga is calling for compensation for families of those who have been victims of extra-judicial executions and individuals injured by the state since the previous year. He believes that addressing these injustices is crucial for national healing and progress.

2. Release of Protesters: Odinga is demanding the release of all individuals who have been detained in connection with the protests that have occurred over the past year. He argues that many of these people have been unjustly held and that their release is necessary for restoring peace and order.

3. Accountability for Police Actions: Odinga is also calling for accountability for police officers involved in shooting or injuring protesters. He stresses that those responsible for excessive force during the protests should be held accountable for their actions.

Throughout his statement, Odinga reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to its foundational principles of democracy, good governance, and social justice.

He emphasized that these principles will continue to guide the party’s actions and decisions. Odinga’s foc s on these core values reflects his ongoing commitment to advocating for a fair and just society.

He also urged all stakeholders to remain committed to the ideals of unity and progress. Odinga believes that by working together and focusing on shared goals, Kenya can achieve prosperity for all its citizens.

His call for unity highlights the importance of collaboration among various political and social groups to address the challenges facing the nation.

The inclusion of ODM members in Ruto’s cabinet could have several implications for Kenyan politics. While the appointments might suggest a potential shift in political alliances, Odinga’s clear stance against any formal coalition indicates that ODM is maintaining its independence.

This move could lead to further discussions and negotiations between the various political factions in Kenya.

Political alliances and agreements can shift rapidly, and the inclusion of ODM members in Ruto’s cabinet may prompt new discussions about the future of these political relationships.
