The small village of Karira in Kirinyaga County, Kenya, is shrouded in grief and confusion following the tragic death of James Macharia Waitherero, a 26-year-old National Youth Service (NYS) graduate.
James’s unexpected death has left his family and the entire community in deep shock, as they seek answers to the puzzling circumstances that led to his demise.
James, a promising young man who had recently completed his NYS training, was last seen alive on the night of July 20, 2024.
On that fateful evening, he left his home to meet friends in Ngurubani, riding his friend’s motorcycle.
According to his mother, Louise Waitherera, James had gone to a local bar in Ngurubani.
While there, he received a phone call from unknown individuals, prompting him to leave the bar. Tragically, he never returned home that night, sparking immediate concern among his family members.
The search for James began almost instantly. His family and friends scoured the area, hoping to find him safe. However, their worst fears were confirmed when they received devastating news.
According to Simon Wanjohi Kariu, James’s uncle, he was brought to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital unconscious by unidentified individuals.
These individuals, whose identities remain unknown, later disappeared, leaving many unanswered questions.
James’s condition was critical, and he was quickly transferred to Kerugoya Hospital by ambulance. Despite the medical team’s efforts, James succumbed to his condition and was pronounced dead.
The family’s anguish deepened when they discovered his body at the Kerugoya mortuary, realizing that their worst nightmare had come true.
Teresiah Wanjiru, James’s aunt, shared that the family is devastated and desperate for answers. She recounted how James’s friend informed her about the mysterious phone call he received at the bar.
This call seems to be a crucial piece of the puzzle, as it led to his sudden departure and subsequent disappearance. The identity of the caller and the content of their conversation remain unknown, adding to the mystery.
James’s family reported the incident to Kiamaciri Police Station, urging the authorities to expedite the investigation into his death.

The family is particularly troubled by the fact that the individuals who brought James to the hospital vanished without providing any information about how he ended up unconscious.
