The tragic story of Joyce Bonareri Omari, a Form One student from Kisii, has left her family and community in deep sorrow.

On July 19, 2024, her mother, Joyce Kemunto, shared the painful details of her daughter's last moments before her untimely death.

Joyce Bonareri was a bright young girl who loved school and had dreams for her future. However, her life took a devastating turn when she was punished by the local chief, Simon Osano, in front of her father, Jared Omari. This public humiliation deeply hurt her, leading to a series of tragic events.

Kemunto recalled her last conversation with Bonareri. The young girl asked her mother if she knew her M-Pesa PIN, which Kemunto did not. Bonareri then ominously told her mother that she would find out that day. She placed her phone on the table and left the house abruptly. This conversation left Kemunto with a sense of unease.

Shortly afterward, Bonareri took her own life, leaving behind a letter that explained her pain and the reasons for her actions. In the letter, she expressed her distress towards Chief Osano, who had embarrassed her in front of her father. She felt deeply hurt and humiliated by the chief's actions, which included chasing her away from school. This incident was too much for the young girl to handle.

In her letter, Bonareri also made a poignant request to the chief. She asked him to take care of her nine-month-old baby and to attend her funeral. This showed her deep concern for her child's future, even in her final moments. Her love for her baby was evident, and her tragic decision was a desperate cry for help.

The aftermath of Bonareri's death has left her family in a difficult situation. Enock Nyariki Otuke, her uncle, explained that the family is facing severe financial difficulties.

As a boda boda operator, Otuke's income is limited, and the costs associated with Bonareri's funeral are overwhelming.

Additionally, the responsibility of caring for Bonareri’s young child now falls on her grieving grandmother, adding to the family's challenges. The baby's needs are extensive, and the family is struggling to meet them.

Otuke made a heartfelt appeal for assistance, emphasizing that the family is not seeking revenge but simply trying to cope with their tragic loss. The pain and sorrow they are experiencing are immense, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

The punishment by Chief Osano has raised questions about the appropriateness and potential consequences of such actions.

In another unrelated but equally tragic event, Eileen Cherotich lost her life under distressing circumstances.

An autopsy confirmed that she had fallen from the car, highlighting another case of a young life ending prematurely due to distressing circumstances.
