Joyce Bonareri was a bright young girl who loved school and had dreams for her future. However, her life took a devastating turn when she was punished by the local chief, Simon Osano, in front of her father, Jared Omari. This public humiliation deeply hurt her, leading to a series of tragic events.
Kemunto recalled her last conversation with Bonareri. The young girl asked her mother if she knew her M-Pesa PIN, which Kemunto did not. Bonareri then ominously told her mother that she would find out that day. She placed her phone on the table and left the house abruptly. This conversation left Kemunto with a sense of unease.
Shortly afterward, Bonareri took her own life, leaving behind a letter that explained her pain and the reasons for her actions. In the letter, she expressed her distress towards Chief Osano, who had embarrassed her in front of her father. She felt deeply hurt and humiliated by the chief's actions, which included chasing her away from school. This incident was too much for the young girl to handle.
In her letter, Bonareri also made a poignant request to the chief. She asked him to take care of her nine-month-old baby and to attend her funeral.
