National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohammed has expressed his support for President William Ruto's initiative to create a broad-based government.
He shared his views in Loosuk village, Samburu County, on Monday during the funeral of Michael Lesepe, father to his bodyguard Ben Lesepe.
Junet, representing the Suna East constituency, emphasized that the ODM party has good intentions and that its leader, Raila Odinga, is a true statesman committed to fighting discrimination.
"We back the establishment of a broad-based government. Our four colleagues who have joined the government as Cabinet Secretaries are committed to serving the people of Kenya," he said.
The MP reaffirmed Raila's dedication to ensuring justice and fairness for all Kenyans, regardless of their tribe, political beliefs, or religious affiliations.
The support from Junet follows the recent appointment of key ODM figures to the Cabinet.
The appointees include ODM national chairman John Mbadi, deputy party leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, and National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.
Junet's comments underline the ODM's commitment to working within the current government to advocate for the rights of Kenyans.
Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda also addressed the mourners, highlighting the importance of respecting former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who supported ODM during the 2022 General Election.
"It's appropriate for ODM to join forces with Kenya Kwanza to form a broad-based government, but we urge its leaders to respect Uhuru Kenyatta, who stood by them in the past," she stated.
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Suleiman Shabal welcomed the broad-based government, emphasizing that the cooperation between President Ruto and Raila could help address Kenya's political and economic challenges.
He likened the situation to a landlord helping a tenant put out a fire before asking questions about its origin.
Samburu Senator Steve Lelegwe also expressed his support, calling for a focus on development and peace.
"Let us all now concentrate on improving the lives of Kenyans. The people of Samburu and all Kenyans need development and peace. We support the new political arrangement between Ruto and Raila," he said.
The reactions to the new political alignment reflect ongoing debates about the future direction of Kenya's government. Some leaders within the opposition have expressed concerns about ODM's collaboration with President Ruto's administration.
They argue that such alliances could dilute the opposition's ability to hold the government accountable.
However, proponents of the broad-based government argue that it offers a unique opportunity to unite the country and address pressing issues more effectively.
