Kericho County mother has been arrested for the murder of her two young children. The case has shocked the local community and drawn attention from across Kenya due to its grim details and the unsettling motivations behind the crime.
Brenda Cheptoo, a resident of Sibaik village in Bureti Constituency, was taken into custody along with a man believed to be her romantic partner.
The two were arrested on July 17, 2024, after a week-long investigation by local authorities. The arrests came following the discovery of the bodies of Cheptoo’s children, Salim Kipkemoi, aged 6, and Sheila Chepkemoi, aged 8.
The case began when the children were reported missing. Their disappearance prompted a search that ended in tragedy when their bodies were found buried in a shallow grave on a banana farm in Sibaik village.
The bodies were discovered wrapped in a red blanket and buried about one meter deep. This discovery was made by Dennis Kimutai, the children’s uncle, who was constructing a fence around his farm at the time.
Kimutai noticed dogs digging at the ground and pulling out a blanket. Curious and alarmed, he approached the site and was immediately struck by a strong, unpleasant odor.
Upon further investigation, Kimutai uncovered the bodies of the two missing children. He promptly alerted local authorities, who then contacted the police.
The police, led by Kericho County Commander Geoffrey Mayek, launched a detailed investigation into the case.
They quickly identified Brenda Cheptoo as the primary suspect. Cheptoo, along with her partner, was apprehended while working at a bar in Litein.
The arrest followed an intensive search that had been underway for several days.
During questioning, Brenda Cheptoo confessed to the crime. She revealed that she had killed her children because she felt they were preventing her from marrying her boyfriend.
Cheptoo’s confession has left the community in shock and disbelief. The notion that personal relationships and desires could lead to such a horrific outcome has disturbed many.
The details of the case are particularly chilling. Cheptoo admitted that she saw her children as obstacles to her personal happiness.
Her actions, driven by a desire to pursue a relationship with her partner, led her to commit the unthinkable.
Kericho County authorities have taken the case very seriously. Commander Mayek has stated that Cheptoo and her partner are considered key suspects in the murder.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to uncover more about the circumstances leading up to the crime. They are also examining the involvement of Cheptoo’s partner to determine his role in the tragic event.
The local community is reeling from the shock of the discovery. The loss of two young lives has deeply affected residents of Sibaik village and surrounding areas. There is a palpable sense of grief and outrage as people come to terms with the horrifying details of the case.
