Kerugoya Boys High School in Kirinyaga Central, Kirinyaga County, has been closed indefinitely following a severe fire that destroyed one of its dormitories.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, causing significant disruption and concern among students, parents, and school officials.

The fire started around 6:30 pm, a time when students were attending their evening prep sessions.

This timing likely prevented any injuries, as the dormitory was empty. Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Alosow confirmed the incident, stating,

“We are yet to establish the cause of the fire outbreak; we are still investigating.” The immediate cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are working diligently to uncover the details.

The blaze completely consumed the dormitory, resulting in the loss of all personal belongings for the 120 students who resided there.

The damage was extensive, leaving the affected students without a place to sleep. In response to this crisis, the school administration decided to send all students home until further notice.

One of the students, expressing the uncertainty of the situation, said, “We have been told to go home until further notice, and our parents have received messages.”

The news of the fire and the subsequent school closure prompted a swift and concerned reaction from parents.

Many rushed to the school on Saturday night, eager to ensure the safety of their children and to seek answers about the cause of the fire.

Commissioner Alosow faced the challenging task of addressing the anxious crowd. He assured them that no students had been injured in the incident and urged everyone to remain calm while investigations continued.

“Nobody was injured. Give us time to investigate; let us not speculate,” he appealed to the worried parents.

On Sunday, the Kerugoya Catholic Church, which sponsors the school, held a service where the father in charge addressed the congregation.

He emphasized the importance of community support and collaboration in the wake of the disaster.

He advised parents and the school board to convene and discuss the best way forward, considering the significant impact of the dormitory’s destruction on the students’ education and well-being.

Detectives have already launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The focus is on understanding what might have triggered the blaze to prevent any future occurrences.

This process is crucial not only for accountability but also for implementing measures to enhance safety in schools across the region.

The fire at Kerugoya Boys High School has highlighted the urgent need for robust fire safety protocols in educational institutions.
