Police are investigating the alleged murder of 19-year-old Akoth Onyango by her husband, Asman Ouma Migori County.
The tragic event unfolded in Kadika village, Suna East sub-county, with the authorities now on a manhunt for the suspect.
On the evening of July 23, 2024, Akoth Onyango and her husband, Asman Ouma, left their home for a walk.
The couple, who had been married for about six months, were known to have ongoing marital disputes. When they did not return that night, their absence raised concerns among their neighbors and relatives.
The following day, Ouma allegedly called his brother, Elvis Omondi, with a chilling confession. He admitted to having killed his wife and revealed the location where he had dumped her body.
The news sent shockwaves through the community, prompting immediate action from the local authorities.
Suna East sub-county police commander Reuben Kemboi confirmed the incident. According to Kemboi, Onyango's body was found a few kilometers from their home, showing signs of strangulation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple’s ongoing domestic issues may have escalated into a fatal confrontation.
"We received a call from the suspect's brother, who informed us about the confession," said Kemboi. "Upon reaching the scene, we found the body with injuries around the neck, which suggests she was strangled. We have launched a manhunt for the suspect and are following several leads."
The brutal murder has left the Kadika village community in a state of mourning and disbelief. Neighbors described Onyango as a young woman with a bright future, whose life was tragically cut short. They expressed their grief and called for justice to be served swiftly.
"This is a very sad day for us," said a neighbor who preferred to remain anonymous. "Akoth was a kind and cheerful person. It's heartbreaking to think that she died in such a violent manner. We hope the police will catch the perpetrator and ensure he faces the full force of the law."
According to recent statistics, cases of domestic violence have been on the rise, with many resulting in severe injuries or even death. Advocacy groups have been calling for stronger legal frameworks and support systems to protect victims and prevent such tragedies.
John Muthama, a local human rights activist, emphasized the need for community awareness and intervention. "Domestic violence is a serious issue that often goes unreported due to stigma and fear," Muthama stated.
"Communities need to be vigilant and support victims by providing safe spaces and encouraging them to speak out.
Additionally, the government must enforce stricter laws and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable."
This incident in Migori is not an isolated case. In another tragic event, police in Narok North sub-county are investigating the murder of 22-year-old Martha Njeri.
According to reports, Njeri had sought refuge at her sister’s home in the Enabelbel area after separating from her husband, Peter Lemaiyan, following a marital feud.
Lemaiyan allegedly traced Njeri to her sister’s home and attacked her with a machete while she was using an outdoor latrine.
Njeri’s screams alerted the family, but by the time they reached her, Lemaiyan had fled the scene. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
In light of these tragic events, there is a growing call for immediate action to combat domestic violence. Advocacy groups, local leaders, and community members are urging the government to implement robust policies and provide adequate resources for victim support services.
"We cannot continue to lose lives to domestic violence," said Agnes Wanjiku, a member of a local women’s rights organization. "It's time for our leaders to take decisive action. We need more shelters for victims, counseling services, and public awareness campaigns to educate people about the signs of domestic abuse and how to seek help."
