Makueni, Kenya – In a dramatic turn of events, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has voiced strong criticism against the recent disruption of a press conference held by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, where a group of over 50 youths stormed the event, creating chaos and cutting short Kalonzo’s briefing.
Governor Mutula, addressing the media following the incident, expressed deep disapproval of the attack on Kalonzo Musyoka.
According to Mutula, the disruption was not only an assault on Kalonzo but also an affront to democratic practices and respect for political leaders.
“It is completely unacceptable for a presidential candidate to be chased away by goons,” Mutula declared. “Such behavior is extremely unfortunate, and ODM must treat Kalonzo Musyoka with the respect he deserves.”
His remarks came in the wake of a tumultuous scene where the youths, apparently loyal to Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio Coalition, overturned chairs and shouted that no one should disrespect Raila during the event.
The press conference, where Kalonzo Musyoka was supposed to discuss his political future and plans, was abruptly halted as the rioters caused chaos. The disturbance led to a hasty evacuation of the leaders present, cutting short the discussions and leaving journalists and attendees unsettled.
Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has been a vocal advocate for Kalonzo Musyoka, emphasizing that Kalonzo’s dedication and loyalty to Raila Odinga have not been reciprocated fairly. He has accused the ODM and Raila of betrayal, suggesting that such actions undermine the democratic process and the dignity of political discourse.
“Kalonzo has been unwavering in his support for Raila. However, it seems betrayal has become the norm,” Mutula remarked.
He further criticized the handling of the situation, suggesting that Raila Odinga and his coalition need to reflect on their treatment of allies and address internal issues that have led to such conflicts.
The disruption at the press conference has also led to broader implications for the political landscape in Kenya.
Mutula asserted that the Ukambani region, where Kalonzo Musyoka is a prominent leader, will rally behind Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions for the 2027 elections.
He emphasized that the region remains committed to supporting Kalonzo, despite the recent tensions within the political sphere.
“Kalonzo will not be deterred by these tactics,” Mutula stated. “We, as Kamba leaders under Kalonzo’s guidance, are resolute in our support for him. Raila should consider joining Ruto and not force us to follow him.”
In light of the incident, Raila Odinga has issued a public apology, acknowledging the security breach and the unfortunate impact on journalists and other leaders present.
Raila’s spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, assured that the Azimio Coalition would investigate how the goons breached security and ensure such incidents do not recur.
“Raila Odinga regrets the events that transpired and offers unreserved apologies to the journalists and fellow leaders who were caught up in the unfortunate incident,” Onyango stated.
He added that the coalition would take necessary measures to strengthen security at future events and ensure the safety of all participants.
Mutula Kilonzo Jr. also used the occasion to address broader concerns regarding the state of the nation.
He highlighted the disparity between the current political elite and the ordinary citizens, noting that the leaders have been living comfortably while the general populace continues to face hardships.
“It has been two years since these leaders were elected, and while they enjoy their privileges, the common Kenyan is still struggling,” Mutula observed. “I believe Kalonzo is a leader who will not misuse the resources of the people. He is committed to the prosperity of Kenya and adheres to the Constitution.”
Mutula’s call for peace and adherence to constitutional principles shows a growing frustration among some political leaders and citizens regarding the current state of governance.
He urged the rioters and those causing disturbances to embrace peace and constructive dialogue rather than resorting to violence and disruption.
