On July 25, 2024, President William Ruto made an important announcement: he has nominated Douglas Kanja to become the new Inspector General of Police. This nomination comes following the resignation of Japhet Koome, who left the position two weeks ago.
Douglas Kanja is a well-respected figure in Kenya’s law enforcement community. His career spans nearly four decades.
Kanja's journey in the police service began in 1985 when he was recruited as a Police Constable. Over the years, his dedication and hard work led him to climb the ranks rapidly.
He was promoted from Police Constable to Police Corporal, and then to Acting Inspector of Police. His career continued to advance as he became an Inspector of Police, Chief Inspector of Police, Superintendent of Police, and eventually reached the level of Senior Superintendent of Police.
His ascent did not stop there; he was later appointed as a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police, Commissioner of Police, and Assistant Inspector General.
Before his recent nomination, Douglas Kanja held several significant roles within the Kenya Police Service. He served as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, a role in which he was responsible for overseeing various aspects of police operations and administration.
Kanja also had a notable tenure as the Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU), a role he held for five years. The GSU is a specialized unit within the Kenya Police that handles serious crimes and emergencies.
His experience as Deputy Commandant of the GSU for three years before that further highlights his extensive background in managing critical police functions.
Additionally, Kanja's career includes serving as the County Police Commander for Kilifi County. This role required him to oversee policing in a specific region, addressing local crime and security issues.
He was also the Deputy Commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, a position that involved ensuring security at major airports.
Furthermore, Kanja served as Chief Armourer at the Police Headquarters, where he was responsible for managing and maintaining police firearms and equipment. His role as Deputy Chief Armourer at the Kenya Police Service Headquarters also contributed to his broad experience in the police force.
In his announcement, President Ruto praised Douglas Kanja’s extensive experience and professional training. Ruto noted that Kanja has undergone significant security-related training both within Kenya and internationally.
"The IG Nominee has undertaken extensive security-related training at home and abroad. He is a career police officer who has served for a cumulative period of thirty-nine years," Ruto stated. This training and experience are expected to be valuable assets in his new role as Inspector General.
Alongside the nomination of Douglas Kanja, President Ruto also made two additional appointments. Gilbert Masengeli was named the acting Inspector General of the National Police Service.
This interim appointment will ensure that the National Police Service continues to operate smoothly while Kanja's nomination is processed. Eliud Langat was also appointed as the new Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service. Langat's appointment is aimed at supporting Kanja in managing the police service effectively.
Douglas Kanja's nomination will now undergo a vetting process by both the National Assembly and the Senate. This process involves reviewing Kanja's qualifications, experience, and suitability for the position.
The approval from these legislative bodies is necessary for him to officially take on the role of Inspector General. If his nomination is confirmed, Kanja will succeed Japhet Koome and take on the crucial task of leading the National Police Service.
The role of the Inspector General is vital in maintaining law and order in Kenya. The Inspector General oversees the entire police force, ensuring that officers carry out their duties effectively and adhere to the law.
This position also involves implementing policies, addressing issues of police misconduct, and working to improve the relationship between the police and the public.
The appointment of Douglas Kanja as Inspector General is expected to bring stability and experienced leadership to the police force. His extensive background in various police roles and his training make him a strong candidate for this significant position.
The vetting process will determine if he will officially take on the role, but his nomination marks an important step in the leadership of Kenya’s law enforcement.
