According to eyewitnesses, the accident involved a collision between the motorbike and a speeding long-distance truck. Reports suggest that the motorbike's front tire burst, causing the rider to lose control.
Despite efforts to regain control, the motorbike veered into the path of the oncoming truck loaded with cement bags.
David Okoth, an eyewitness, recounted the harrowing scene: "The truck was moving fast, and when the motorbike's tire burst, they couldn't avoid the collision. The rider was thrown into a ditch, while the passenger was tragically run over by the truck."
Local residents expressed deep sadness and concern over the incident, highlighting that similar accidents have occurred in the area due to speeding trucks on the narrow road.
Helen Awuor, who witnessed the aftermath, shared her shock: "I heard a loud noise and rushed to see what happened. It was heartbreaking to find two lives lost."
The driver of the truck, Wesley Kosgei, explained that he tried to swerve when he saw the motorbike approaching but couldn't avoid the collision in time. He immediately reported the incident to the authorities and cooperated with the investigation.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital for identification and preservation pending further investigations.
This incident has once again raised concerns about road safety on the Rongo-Homa Bay Road, with locals urging the government to widen the road and enforce speed limits to prevent future tragedies.
