Baringo: 2 Reported Dead as Zakayo Ruto, Wife and Son Missing after Landslide Sweeps Away Homes

A severe landslide struck Kapchebogel Village in Baringo County, Kenya, on the night of August 6, 2024, resulting in the destruction of several homes and significant loss of life. 

The landslide occurred in Kasisit, Saimo Kipsaraman Ward, Baringo North Constituency, and has left the local community in mourning and shock.

According to reports, the landslide caused extensive damage as it swept away multiple houses in the area. The natural disaster has already resulted in the confirmed deaths of two individuals. 

Among those reported missing are Zakayo Ruto, his wife Gladys Chepkangor, and their 13-year-old son. Their home was among those completely engulfed by the landslide, and despite ongoing search and rescue efforts, they remain unaccounted for.

The landslide occurred in the middle of the night, which made it particularly devastating. The sudden nature of the disaster meant that many residents had little time to react or escape.

The impact of the landslide was severe, with three homes reported to have been swept away entirely. Rescue teams are working hard to locate the missing family members and assist those affected by the disaster.

Local authorities have mobilized search and rescue teams to address the crisis. The Kabartonjo Police Station confirmed that efforts are underway to find those who are missing and to provide aid to the survivors. 

The area chief reported that while some individuals have been rescued, including Samuel Chesaro, who was found after his house was swept away, others are still missing. The confirmed deceased include Isaac Kimuge, whose home was also destroyed.

In light of the disaster, local officials are urging residents to move to safer locations to prevent further loss of life. 

The ongoing rescue operations are critical, as the situation remains dire and the risk of additional landslides or further damage is a concern. 

The community is coming together to support one another, but the scale of the destruction has left many people in urgent need of assistance.
