A police officer is recovering from serious injuries after being attacked and robbed by a boda boda gang in Mihango, Nairobi County.

The officer, who was returning home after a night out with friends, was ambushed by two men on a motorbike who stole his Ceska pistol, wallet, and mobile phone.

The incident occurred along the Eastern Bypass, a growing concern for authorities due to increasing criminal activities in the area.

According to the police report, the officer and his friends visited a popular drinking joint in Mihango around 9 p.m. on the night of the incident.

They enjoyed their time at the bar before moving to another nearby joint to continue their night out. By 2 a.m., the officer decided to leave for his parents' home, which was located close to the drinking spots.

As he made his way home, he was suddenly confronted by two individuals riding a boda boda. The attackers, who were armed, overpowered the officer and snatched his firearm during the brief struggle. In addition to his Ceska pistol, the robbers also stole his wallet and mobile phone, leaving him injured on the roadside.

Despite the physical and emotional toll of the attack, the officer managed to report the incident at a nearby police station.

This triggered a swift response from officers stationed at Mihang’o and detectives from Kayole, who visited the scene to gather evidence and begin investigations.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were also involved in the investigation. They visited both drinking joints where the officer had spent part of his evening in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the attack.

In addition, they conducted interviews at the officer’s parents' home, where he was headed at the time of the robbery.

To verify details, detectives also questioned the officer's wife, who confirmed that her husband had left home with his firearm earlier that night.

This corroborated the officer’s story, but as investigations progressed, detectives became concerned about the officer's condition.

The police report indicated that the officer appeared intoxicated when he was detained. He had visible bruises on his mouth, elbow, and knee, and his clothes were torn, suggesting a physical altercation.

Despite his injuries, the officer was placed in custody to assist in the ongoing investigation, raising concerns about the circumstances leading up to the robbery.

The incident has raised alarm about the increasing number of attacks targeting police officers in the country. The boldness of criminals, particularly in urban areas like Nairobi, continues to pose a significant threat to law enforcement.

This is not the first time police officers have been victims of such attacks. In December 2023, an Officer Commanding a Station (OCS) in Vihiga County was similarly ambushed by robbers. In that incident, the attackers stabbed the OCS and stole his Jericho pistol before fleeing the scene.

The recent attack in Mihango highlights the ongoing risks faced by police officers, even when off duty. Authorities are now focused on recovering the stolen firearm and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The police are urging members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may help in tracking down the criminals involved.
