Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a middle-aged man suspected of breaking into a car and stealing Ksh1.4 million.

The arrest took place after a well-coordinated operation that involved officers from Lang’ata and Changamwe DCI branches.

The theft occurred on June 26, 2024, in Mombasa, where the suspect allegedly broke into a Nissan X-Trail parked outside a local supermarket.

The suspect reportedly accessed the vehicle through the driver’s door and took the large sum of money before fleeing the scene. Following the incident, DCI detectives immediately launched a manhunt to track down the culprit.

After several weeks of investigation, the suspect was located at his hideout in Nairobi. DCI officers from Lang’ata successfully apprehended him and handed him over to their counterparts in Changamwe.

The Changamwe team quickly arraigned the suspect at the Mombasa Law Courts, where he is now facing charges for the theft.

In their statement, the DCI urged Kenyans to remain cautious, as car break-ins and vehicle-related thefts are on the rise.

They advised the public to take extra precautions, especially when parking their vehicles. The DCI recommends parking in well-lit and visible areas, ensuring that all car doors and windows are securely locked, and removing or hiding valuable items from plain sight.

The DCI also highlighted the importance of installing anti-theft devices to prevent such incidents.

They noted that many thieves target vehicles with easily accessible valuables, making it crucial to secure vehicles properly and avoid leaving anything that could attract potential criminals.

The agency assured Kenyans that it is committed to combating car theft and related crimes. They emphasized that those involved in these activities will be dealt with according to the law.

The DCI vowed to continue their efforts in protecting the public by swiftly addressing incidents of vehicle theft and break-ins.
