Eldoret has officially been designated Kenya's fifth city, joining Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru in this prestigious category.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for the town, which has long been a center of activity and progress in the Rift Valley region.

This new status reflects Eldoret's rapid growth and its role as the headquarters of Uasin Gishu County. The elevation of Eldoret to city status was celebrated with a special ceremony attended by President William Ruto.

The President presented the city charter and seal, symbolizing Eldoret’s new status. This event was not just a formal occasion but a celebration of the town's achievements and its potential for future development.

Eldoret's journey to city status has been marked by considerable development and growth. With a population exceeding one million, the town has become a significant economic and cultural hub in Kenya.

It is known for its vibrant community, thriving businesses, and educational institutions. Additionally, Eldoret has a strong reputation in athletics, often referred to as the “City of Champions” due to its history of producing world-class runners.

The President's visit included a brief ceremony at the county headquarters, where he officially handed over the city charter.

Following this, he took a symbolic ride through the town, greeting residents and engaging with the local community. This was a moment of great pride for Eldoret, as the community came together to celebrate their new status and the opportunities it brings.

The city charter and seal awarded to Eldoret are not just ceremonial but also come with new responsibilities and expectations. As a city, Eldoret will need to manage expanded infrastructure, services, and governance.

This includes upgrading facilities such as schools, hospitals, and roads to meet the needs of its growing population. The designation also opens the door for increased investment and development, which will help drive economic growth in the region.

President Ruto's remarks during the ceremony emphasized the importance of supporting cities like Eldoret. He highlighted that the government is committed to investing in urban development to ensure that cities can thrive and contribute to national progress.

The elevation of Eldoret is seen as part of a broader strategy to enhance urban areas across Kenya, fostering economic development and improving the quality of life for residents.

The celebration in Eldoret was marked by excitement and enthusiasm. Residents took part in various activities, including traditional dances and cultural performances.
