On August 1, 2024, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made a strong statement against the ongoing weekly protests in Karatina town.

He described these protests as "unacceptable nonsense" and has called for immediate action to address the situation.

Gachagua is determined to restore peace and ensure that local businesses can operate without being disturbed.

The Deputy President voiced his concerns during a recent event held at Muruguru in Nyeri. He was attending the funeral of a community elder, Mzee Kabui, when he took the opportunity to criticize the frequent demonstrations in Karatina.

According to Gachagua, these protests are disrupting the normally peaceful environment of the Mt Kenya region and are harming business activities.

He noted that Karatina is the only town in Central Kenya experiencing such persistent anti-government demonstrations. Unlike other towns in the region, Karatina has been facing these disruptions week after week, which is causing significant problems for the residents and local businesses.

The Deputy President has accused known criminal gangs of being behind the protests. He claimed that these gangs have made it a routine to disrupt daily activities and create chaos in the town.

Despite attempts by the police to disperse the protestors, Gachagua says that the gangs regroup every week and continue their disruptive actions.

In response to the situation, Gachagua has directed the County Commissioner and local authorities to take strong measures to end the protests.

He emphasized that the criminals involved in these demonstrations are well-known and should be arrested and prosecuted.

According to Gachagua, the ongoing disturbances are not just a minor inconvenience but a serious threat to the peace and stability of the region.

He stressed that the Mt Kenya region, known for its peace and stability, should not be subjected to such disruptions.
