Govt Confirms Plans to Bring Back Linda Mama

Amid rising public concern, the Kenyan government has taken a significant step to secure the future of the Linda Mama program, which provides free maternity care to mothers across the country.

This move comes as the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is set to be replaced by the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

Public Health and Professional Standards Permanent Secretary Mary Muthoni recently addressed these concerns, assuring citizens that the Linda Mama program will remain an essential part of the nation's health strategy.

The Linda Mama program offers comprehensive maternity care for 12 months, covering services like ante-natal clinic visits, deliveries, post-natal clinics, and newborn care.

Initially part of the NHIF, there was widespread speculation and worry about the continuity of these services with the transition to SHIF.

However, PS Muthoni confirmed that the program would be integrated into SHIF and emphasized the government's dedication to maintaining and enhancing maternal health services.

"We understand the concerns regarding the new social health insurance system, and I want to reassure all the mothers in this country that the government is listening. Linda Mama will be included in the social health insurance," Muthoni stated firmly.

She highlighted the government's commitment by revealing an allocation of Ksh2 billion to revitalize the Linda Mama program. This significant funding aims to ensure that expectant mothers continue to receive the essential care they need without interruption.

PS Muthoni's announcement was made to address the mounting public anxiety and speculation about the future of the Linda Mama program. She reassured the public that the program remains a cornerstone of the government's health initiatives, particularly in supporting maternal health.

"The health of our mothers and children is paramount. Let us not be swayed by other narratives. Linda Mama is here to stay," she reiterated.

The reassurance comes at a crucial time when public participation is ongoing, with the government actively seeking input from citizens on how to improve the Linda Mama program.

With the transition from NHIF to SHIF, the government aims to enhance the benefits provided by the Linda Mama program.

The revamped program will be a significant pillar of SHIF, dedicated specifically to expectant mothers.

The enhanced benefits will ensure that all maternity-related expenses, including those for normal or caesarean deliveries, are fully covered without additional costs to the patients.

"This year alone, we have injected about Ksh2 billion into the program. Therefore, let us not worry," Muthoni reassured.

The Health Cabinet Secretary nominee, Deborah Barasa, has also voiced strong support for the Linda Mama program.

During her appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Dr. Barasa, who is herself a beneficiary of the program, emphasized its importance and promised to ensure its seamless integration into SHIF.

"I am a beneficiary of Linda Mama, and my daughter is a beneficiary of Linda Mama. I will ensure it is incorporated if SHIF is rolled out," she affirmed.

Dr. Barasa highlighted the need for a well-planned transition to prevent any disruption in services.

"During the transition period, at times such activities fall through the cracks. Funds have been allocated, so we need to have a transition plan to ensure Linda Mama is always there; this is an area we will look into and ensure all mothers and children are covered," she explained.
