On August 1, 2024, a significant meeting took place between Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ford Foundation.

The meeting was led by Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei and involved discussions with representatives from the Ford Foundation, an influential nonprofit organization based in the United States.

This meeting was important as it addressed several concerns raised in a letter sent to the Ford Foundation's President, Darren Walker, on July 18, 2024.

The primary focus of the meeting was to discuss how the Ford Foundation’s donor funds are being used. Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these funds should be utilized responsibly and in alignment with Kenya’s constitutional values and development goals.

The Kenyan officials stressed that it is crucial for the Ford Foundation to follow the guidelines and principles outlined in the agreement between the Kenyan government and the Foundation.

A major point of discussion was the monitoring of grant beneficiaries. The Kenyan government wants to ensure that the funds given to various organizations are being used in accordance with local laws.

This means that all activities funded by the Ford Foundation should adhere to Kenya's legal standards and contribute positively to the country’s development. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs insisted on the need for rigorous oversight to prevent any misuse of the funds.

The meeting also highlighted Kenya’s commitment to fostering an open civic space. This means creating an environment where citizens can actively participate in governance and hold institutions accountable.

The Ministry’s concerns about the use of donor funds are part of this broader effort to maintain transparency and ensure that international aid supports Kenya’s developmental and constitutional objectives.

The context for this meeting involved recent tensions between the Kenyan government and the Ford Foundation.

President William Ruto had previously accused the Ford Foundation of funding unrest and violence during recent anti-government protests.

These accusations were serious, leading to a demand for detailed information about how the Foundation’s funds were being distributed and used by Kenyan organizations.

In response to these accusations, the Ford Foundation denied any wrongdoing. They clarified that their operations in Kenya are focused solely on charitable activities.

The Foundation emphasized that their presence is aimed at supporting development projects and other positive initiatives in Kenya.

They also pointed out that all their operational details are transparently available on their website, which is meant to provide clarity and maintain public trust.

The discussion also covered the need for ongoing communication and collaboration between the Kenyan government and the Ford Foundation.

This involves ensuring that both parties are aligned in their objectives and that there is mutual understanding of how funds should be utilized.

The goal is to maintain a positive relationship and to ensure that the assistance provided by international organizations contributes effectively to Kenya’s growth.
