The Kenyan government has issued a new directive requiring all school-going children to be registered for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) before the third term begins.

.This move by the Ministry of Education is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that students have access to healthcare services through the national health insurance scheme. Parents and guardians must comply with this directive before schools reopen next week.

This initiative aims to ensure that every learner has access to affordable healthcare while attending school. By making this insurance mandatory, the government is looking to protect children from health-related risks, which could affect their education.

The registration process is straightforward and accessible to all Kenyans. The Ministry of Education has provided several platforms to make it easy for parents to register their children for SHIF.

Parents and guardians can complete the registration online by visiting the SHIF official website (sha.go.ke). Alternatively, they can use their mobile phones to dial *147# or register through the Afya Ng’u platform (afyangu.go.ke).

In case parents encounter any difficulties during the registration process, the Social Health Authority has set up a customer service call center to assist them.

Parents can contact the center through a toll-free number, 0800720601, or send an email to info@sha.co.ke for support.

The government has emphasized that this process must be completed before the start of the third term. This ensures that learners can access healthcare services without any interruptions throughout the school year.

The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is designed to provide affordable and accessible healthcare services to all Kenyans, including school-going children.

By enrolling children in the SHIF, parents ensure that their children can receive medical treatment when needed, without the financial strain often associated with healthcare costs.

The government has recognized the importance of good health in education. Healthy students are more likely to attend school regularly and perform better academically.

On the other hand, children who do not have access to healthcare may miss school due to illness, which can negatively impact their studies. By requiring SHIF registration, the government hopes to reduce such disruptions and promote a healthier learning environment for all students.

The Ministry of Education has also pointed out that this registration process is crucial for ensuring that learners are covered under SHIF, which will protect them from unexpected medical emergencies. With this initiative, the government is taking steps to support the well-being of students across the country.

To register for SHIF, parents must provide several key details. This includes their national identification number, full name, occupation, date of birth, and marital status.

Additionally, they will need to supply their Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN number and their personal contact information, such as their phone number and email address.

The registration process also requires parents to provide their physical address, including the county and postal address where they reside. This information helps ensure that all registered individuals are correctly documented in the system.

Parents must also declare the beneficiaries of their SHIF contributions. In this case, the beneficiaries are their children, who will be registered as dependents under the SHIF scheme.

Parents will need to provide the names and details of their children, as listed on their identification cards, and state their relationship with the dependents (e.g., son or daughter). Additionally, parents must choose a preferred medical facility where their children can receive healthcare services.

Once all the required information is provided, parents must sign the registration document to confirm that the details are accurate and truthful. If any changes occur in the future, such as updates to dependents, the registration can be amended to reflect those changes.
