The incident began earlier in the day when Mistry was arrested for possessing firearms without a valid permit.
Mistry’s troubles started at a local entertainment venue in Karen, Nairobi. Police were called to the scene after they received reports about Mistry and his illegal possession of firearms.
When officers arrived, they found Mistry in possession of several guns. This led to his immediate arrest and the impounding of his vehicle. The car was towed to Karen Police Station, where it was searched thoroughly.
Inside Mistry’s vehicle, police discovered three pistols and a significant amount of ammunition. This discovery added to the charges against him.
Mistry was then escorted to the police station, where he was held in a cell while the authorities conducted further investigations.
As part of their standard procedure, police also visited Mistry’s residence at Southlands Estate Jordan Court House to search for additional weapons or ammunition.
At his home, the police found even more evidence. They discovered a shotgun and 210 rounds of ammunition. These findings confirmed that Mistry was not only violating firearm regulations but was also in possession of a substantial arsenal of weapons.
Although Mistry presented a civilian firearms certificate to the police, it was found to be expired. The certificate had lapsed on February 21, 2023, rendering it invalid.
With the expired certificate and the discovered weapons, Mistry was officially booked into custody.
Corporal Joseph Etemesi and Police Constable James King'ori were assigned to oversee him. They were responsible for ensuring he remained in the cell and did not pose a threat to others.
Mistry, however, had other plans. He requested permission to retrieve a heavy sweater from his car, which was parked a short distance from the cell. The officers allowed him to go to the vehicle, believing it was a simple request. Mistry seized this opportunity to carry out his escape.
Once he reached his car, Mistry quickly locked himself inside. The officers, realizing what was happening, immediately called for backup from the station guards.
Officer King'ori attempted to close the main gate to prevent Mistry from driving out, but Mistry was determined to escape. As he sped towards the gate, Officer King'ori shouted for help and tried to block his path.
Despite the efforts of the Officer Commanding Station and his deputy, who rushed outside to intervene, Mistry managed to drive his car through the main gate.
In the process, he struck Officer King'ori, who was trying to stop him. The officer was injured, suffering from wounds to his left leg. The scene was chaotic, and the severity of the situation was evident.
The police immediately began documenting the scene and collecting evidence. Investigations into the escape were launched, and a manhunt for Mistry was initiated.
The police are actively searching for him, as his escape not only represents a significant security breach but also poses a threat due to the dangerous weapons he still possesses.
