The mother of businessman and politician Jimi Wanjigi has spoken out against the police raid that took place at her son’s residence.
On August 9, 2024, Wanjigi’s mother expressed her deep disappointment and frustration over the incident, which she described as both unfortunate and distressing.
Speaking to reporters, she reflected on the timing of the raid, which occurred shortly after the funeral of Jimi Wanjigi’s father, just a month prior.
She firmly defended her son’s character, stating, “I’ve known Jimi since he was a child, and I can say with certainty that he has never been involved in criminal activities. He is a caring son, father, and husband. It is my hope that people will recognize his innocence after this incident.”
The raid, which took place early in the morning on August 9, was conducted by a group of men wearing balaclavas and carrying assault rifles.
According to Wanjigi’s lawyer, Willis Otieno, the police woke up Wanjigi and his family around 6 a.m. and forcibly entered their home.
Otieno described the scene as chaotic and alarming, with the men breaking into rooms and pointing guns at the occupants.
“The police arrived at 6 a.m., and instead of a peaceful and orderly search, they barged in aggressively,” Otieno said. “They forced the family out of their rooms and started tearing things apart. It was a distressing experience for everyone involved.”
Otieno also questioned the necessity of the early morning raid, given that a similar search had already been conducted the previous night. He wondered why the police would need to conduct a second search so soon after the first one. “Why would the police need to come back in the early hours of the morning when they had already completed a search the night before?” he asked.
Adding to the controversy, Otieno alleged that the police stole valuable items from the house during the raid. He claimed that the police had cut off the electricity, plunging the house into darkness, which allowed them to steal items without being easily detected.
"The electricity was disconnected, leaving the house in total darkness,” Otieno said. “This made it easier for the police to take valuables and prevent the family from using the internet to call for help.”
Wanjigi’s lawyer expressed concern about the overall conduct of the police during the operation. He suggested that the manner in which the search was carried out, including the use of masks and weapons, was excessive and inappropriate.
He also reassured the public that Jimi Wanjigi is in a safe location and will cooperate with the authorities if a warrant is issued against him.
The raid has stirred significant public and media interest, raising questions about the actions and motivations of the police.
Critics argue that the aggressive tactics and alleged theft during the raid have not only caused undue distress but also cast a shadow over the integrity of the police force involved.
