Kenyan Teachers to Receive Salary Increase Starting August 2024

Teachers across Kenya will enjoy a salary boost starting at the end of August 2024, thanks to a Ksh.13 billion fund provided by the government.

This increase, which varies from Ksh.1,000 to Ksh.3,000 depending on the teacher's job grade, aims to address financial delays and improve the livelihoods of educators nationwide.

Under the new salary structure, the lowest-paid teachers, classified as Grade B5, will see their basic salary rise from Ksh.22,739 to Ksh.23,830. This adjustment reflects an increase of Ksh.1,091.

Senior primary school teachers in Grade C2 will receive a salary increase from Ksh.45,776 to Ksh.47,858, marking a boost of Ksh.2,082.

For mid-grade teachers, including head teachers of primary schools at Grade C5, the salary will go up from Ksh.78,667 to Ksh.79,651. This represents an increase of Ksh.984. The highest-paid teachers, chief principals at Grade D5, will see their salary grow from Ksh.159,534 to Ksh.162,539, an increase of Ksh.3,005.

The revised salaries aim to better reflect the teachers' roles and contributions. Besides their basic pay, teachers also receive various allowances. These include commuter, leave, hardship, and housing allowances, which differ based on the job grade and location of the school.

The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the salary increment will be included in the August payslips. This will also cover arrears from July 2024, ensuring that teachers are compensated for the past delays.

This salary increase comes after several challenges related to financial constraints, and it is part of a broader effort to support educators and enhance the quality of education in Kenya.
