Mary Gathiru moved to the United States 19 years ago, leaving her family in Kenya to seek better opportunities.

During this time, she built a new life, living first in Kansas and later in Washington State. However, her recent return to Kenya was marred by profound sadness.

Mary’s mother, Susan Wanjiru Gathiru, had been fighting cancer for eight years. Tragically, Susan passed away just two days after Mary’s arrival.

The reunion, long-awaited and filled with anticipation, quickly turned into a heartbreaking farewell.

Mary had not seen her mother since she left Kenya nearly two decades ago. Susan’s long battle with cancer had taken a significant toll on her health, but her strength and determination had kept her going.

Mary shared her feelings during the burial service, highlighting the emotional impact of her mother’s passing.

She described her mother as a disciplinarian and a successful businesswoman who played a pivotal role in shaping her children’s lives.

“My mum made me who I am,” Mary said, her voice filled with emotion. She reflected on the strict upbringing her mother had provided, which, in hindsight, she recognized as a crucial part of her development.

Susan’s business acumen was well-known among her family and friends. She had a remarkable ability to manage and grow money, ensuring that her family always had what they needed.

This industrious nature made her a pillar of support for her children, instilling in them the values of hard work and perseverance.

For eight years, Susan battled cancer with unwavering faith and strength. Despite her illness, she remained active and involved in family gatherings and community events.

Mary recalled receiving her mother’s medical records, which often painted a grim picture. Yet, when she compared these reports to her mother’s vibrant presence, it was hard to believe Susan was as ill as the records suggested.

“She never missed any gathering, even though she was critically ill,” Mary said.

The burial service was a moment of reflection for Mary and her siblings. They shared memories of their mother’s dedication and love.

Susan’s ability to turn small amounts of money into significant resources was a testament to her sharp business skills. This talent ensured that her family never lacked essentials, even in the face of economic hardships.

Mary’s speech also touched on the evolution of her relationship with her mother. She admitted that, during their younger years, she and her siblings did not always see eye to eye with their parents.

“When you grow old, you learn that your parents were right,” she said.

Susan’s faith was another cornerstone of her life. She fought her illness with a strong spirit and unwavering belief.

Her religious convictions provided her with the strength to endure the pain and challenges of her condition. Even in her final moments, Susan’s faith did not waver, offering comfort to her family during this difficult time.
