Kisumu, Kenya - A mother of three from Kisumu is urgently seeking financial assistance after being attacked by armed robbers, leaving her with severe injuries and a hospital bill she cannot afford.
Beryl Adhiambo, who earns a living as a laundry woman in Mamboleo, was viciously attacked by two masked robbers while returning home to Elgon Estate.
The shocking incident occurred in broad daylight, highlighting the growing security concerns in the area.
On the day of the attack, Beryl was carrying a paper bag with her belongings when the two robbers confronted her. They assaulted her, took her belongings, and left her lying on the roadside, bleeding and unconscious.
Passersby, initially mistaking her for a drunkard, eventually realized she was seriously injured. They rushed her to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), where she received emergency medical treatment that saved her life.
However, the cost of the treatment has become an overwhelming burden for Beryl and her family. Since July 15, 2024, Beryl has been detained at the hospital because she cannot pay the KSh 63,000 medical bill.
The hospital has refused to discharge her until the bill is settled, leaving her separated from her three young children, who desperately need their mother.
Beryl’s situation has been made even more difficult by her family’s financial struggles. Her elderly grandmother, who has been trying to support the family, is unable to cover the hospital bill.
Beryl’s husband, who was also a victim of a similar robbery incident last year, is currently unwell and unable to work.
This has left Beryl as the sole breadwinner for her family, and her absence has had a devastating impact on her children, particularly her youngest, a 10-month-old baby who has been crying constantly since her mother was hospitalized.
Eunice Atieno, a relative of Beryl, has been trying to raise awareness of the family’s plight and has appealed to well-wishers for help.
Despite their best efforts, the family has not been able to secure the funds needed to pay the hospital bill. Eunice explained that Beryl’s situation has caused immense stress and suffering for the entire family, and they are desperate to bring her home.
The local chief, Felix Arodi, has also intervened in the situation. He requested the hospital to waive Beryl’s bill, but the request was denied.
Chief Arodi condemned the attack on Beryl and assured the community that the authorities are working to improve security in the area.
He vowed that those responsible for the attack would be brought to justice and that the local government is taking steps to prevent such incidents from happening again.
"This kind of criminal behavior will not be tolerated," Chief Arodi said. "We are increasing security measures in the area, and I want to assure the residents that those responsible for attacking Beryl will be held accountable. Their days of terrorizing innocent people are numbered."
They are asking for donations to help settle the hospital bill so that Beryl can be reunited with her children and start the process of healing from this traumatic experience. The family is reaching out to anyone who can assist in any way, no matter how small the contribution.
