A 35-year-old man was apprehended for stealing fuel from a telecommunications facility in Wajir.
The suspect, identified as Mukhtar Suleiman, was caught in the act during the early hours of Friday morning, August 2, 2024. Suleiman is currently being held at Wajir Police Station, awaiting further legal action.
The theft occurred at a telco facility located in the Halane area. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), police received a tip-off about the break-in in the early morning hours.
Acting on this intelligence, officers quickly responded and arrived at the scene just in time to catch Suleiman and his accomplices in the middle of siphoning diesel.
The police report states that when officers arrived, they found Suleiman and his associates actively engaged in the illegal activity.
While Suleiman was detained, his accomplices managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
The police are currently searching for these other individuals.
At the scene, law enforcement recovered a substantial amount of stolen fuel and the equipment used in the theft.
The items recovered included three full 20-liter jerry cans of diesel, one half-full 20-liter jerry can, 14 empty jerry cans, and a siphoning pipe.
This equipment was used to remove and transport the fuel from the facility. The police have gathered these items as evidence in their ongoing investigation.
Mukhtar Suleiman is now in custody at Wajir Police Station. He is expected to face charges related to the theft once the investigation is completed.
The authorities are continuing their efforts to locate and apprehend the other suspects who escaped the scene.
