Meg Whitman Defends Ford Foundation Amid Allegations of Sponsoring Anarchy in Kenya

U.S. Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman addressed serious allegations concerning the Ford Foundation, a well-known global philanthropic organization.

During the interview, hosted by Yvonne Okwara, Whitman firmly denied claims that the Ford Foundation was involved in funding activities aimed at destabilizing Kenya.

The allegations surfaced as Kenya's political environment became increasingly tense, with some factions accusing international organizations, like the Ford Foundation, of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

These claims suggested that the Ford Foundation was using its resources to sponsor anarchy, a charge that has since sparked significant debate.

Whitman, who represents the U.S. in Kenya, did not mince words when it came to her thoughts on these accusations.

"I thought that was wrong," she stated emphatically, referring to the claims against the Ford Foundation.

She went on to explain that the Ford Foundation has been operating in Kenya for nearly 60 years, primarily focusing on supporting civil society organizations.

These organizations work on various issues, including human rights, governance, and social justice.

"The Ford Foundation has worked in this country for almost 60 years," Whitman said, adding that their work has been instrumental in the country's development. "I think that in the end, people will agree that the Ford Foundation had nothing to do with this."

Whitman’s comments come at a time when the Kenyan government has been vocal about its concerns regarding foreign influence in the country's political landscape.

However, the ambassador made it clear that such accusations against the Ford Foundation were not only unfounded but also damaging to the long-standing relationship between Kenya and its international partners.

Whitman highlighted the critical role that the Ford Foundation has played in Kenya over the years. The foundation has been a key supporter of civil society organizations, which are essential in promoting transparency, accountability, and social justice within the country.

By funding these groups, the Ford Foundation has helped to empower citizens, advocate for human rights, and support democratic processes.

Despite the sensitive nature of the topic, Whitman remained firm in her defense of the Ford Foundation. She stressed the importance of international partnerships and the positive impact that organizations like the Ford Foundation have had on Kenya's progress.

"I thought it was very inappropriate for the government to go after the Ford Foundation," she noted.

The ambassador’s remarks have resonated with many in the Kenyan civil society sector. Organizations that rely on international funding often face challenges, and the recent political rhetoric has only added to these difficulties.
