Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has made notable remarks regarding the future of Cabinet Secretaries affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Kuria's statements have sparked discussions about the stability of the government led by President William Ruto, especially concerning the involvement of opposition members within the administration.
Kuria, known for his candid political commentary, suggested that Cabinet Secretaries from the Raila Odinga-led ODM might consider resigning before the 2027 general elections.
This speculation comes after a public statement by Wycliffe Oparanya, the current Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, who hinted that he might resign if his concerns within the government were not addressed.
Oparanya’s comments seem to have triggered Kuria’s reflections on the broader implications for other ODM-affiliated Cabinet members.
According to Kuria, the dissatisfaction expressed by Oparanya may not be an isolated incident. He believes that other Cabinet Secretaries from ODM might also have their own political ambitions, which could lead them to step down from their government positions as the 2027 elections draw closer.
These resignations, if they occur, could be motivated by the desire to focus on their political careers and positions in the next election cycle.
In an interview with Citizen TV, Kuria elaborated on his views, expressing both concern and understanding about the potential departures of these key government officials.
He noted that while the involvement of ODM members in the government was initially seen as a sign of unity and cooperation, their long-term commitment to their roles remains uncertain.
"I think they will walk out at some point," Kuria said. "They have their interests for 2027. So I just hope that aside from having their interests, they'll not forget that this is not a laboratory. This is a real country."
Kuria’s comments also touch on a recurring theme in Kenyan politics—the uneasy balance between political alliances and national governance. The inclusion of opposition members in the government, particularly those from ODM, was seen as a move towards greater political inclusivity.
However, Kuria's remarks suggest that the underlying political interests of these individuals could eventually take precedence, leading to potential instability within the government.
Moreover, Kuria criticized the idea of relying on political handshakes and alliances as a solution to Kenya's longstanding issues.
He argued that these arrangements, while temporarily effective, do not provide a permanent solution to the challenges facing the country.
According to Kuria, Kenya needs a stable and focused government that is not constantly shifting due to political realignments.
This is not the first time Kuria has expressed skepticism about the longevity of political alliances. In a video from February 2022, Kuria predicted that a handshake between President Ruto and Raila Odinga was likely, similar to the ones that have occurred in previous administrations.
He pointed out that despite his longstanding position as an opposition leader, Raila has a history of eventually working with the government, which casts doubt on his consistency as an opposition figure.
Kuria’s prediction from 2022 appears to be aligning with current events, as the relationship between Ruto and Raila continues to evolve.
The inclusion of ODM members in Ruto's Cabinet was initially seen as a strategic move to bring about political harmony, but the recent developments suggest that this harmony may be temporary.
