NEWS JUST IN; Raila Odinga Leads in AU Commission Chairperson Race, Ahead of Two Competitors

Raila Odinga is making significant strides in his bid to become the next Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

According to recent reports, Odinga is currently leading the race against his two main competitors, Anil Gayan from Mauritius and Mahamous Ali Youssouf from Djibouti.

The race for the AUC Chairperson position has heated up, with Raila Odinga emerging as the frontrunner. Odinga has garnered endorsements from 16 African countries, showcasing strong support across the continent.

These endorsements come from a diverse group of nations, including Algeria, Angola, the Central African Republic, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and the East African Community.

In comparison, his closest competitor, Mahamous Ali Youssouf, has received endorsements from only two countries. Anil Gayan, the candidate from Mauritius, has the backing of his home country but lacks widespread support beyond that.

Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya's Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, has positioned himself as a strong candidate for the AUC Chairmanship. His experience in development and politics, including his recent role as an international development leader, adds to his appeal.

If elected, Odinga has promised to step away from Kenyan politics, focusing solely on his responsibilities at the African Union. President William Ruto is expected to officially endorse Raila Odinga's candidacy next Tuesday, marking a significant moment in the campaign.

This endorsement is likely to bolster Odinga's chances, given Ruto's influential position in Kenyan politics. The African Union has set August 6 as the deadline for applicants to submit their nominations for various Commission posts.

The position of AUC Chairperson is highly coveted, as it holds substantial influence over the direction and policies of the African Union.

Raila Odinga’s campaign has been characterized by a strong push for unity and cooperation among African nations. His vision for the AUC includes enhancing regional integration, fostering economic development, and addressing key issues such as climate change and security.

Odinga’s leadership experience and broad support base make him a formidable candidate in this race.
