Ruto's Message After Junet Mohamed's Linked His Deal With RailaOdinga a "Come We Stay" Marriage

On August 24, 2024, during the homecoming ceremony for Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliff Oparanya, President William Ruto addressed recent comments made by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

Mohamed, who is also the National Assembly Minority Leader, had compared the political relationship between Ruto and ODM (Orange Democratic Movement) leader Raila Odinga to a “come we stay” marriage—a term used to describe a relationship without formal commitment.

In his speech, President Ruto made it clear that he was not pleased with Mohamed’s comparison. He warned people to be careful with their statements about the ODM party, suggesting that such comments undermine the party's role in Kenyan politics.

Ruto emphasized that he has been closely involved with ODM, recognizing its strength and persistence in the political arena. He expressed his respect for the party, noting that ODM leaders are among the most consistent and dedicated in Kenyan politics.

Ruto's comments came as a response to claims that he and Raila Odinga had entered into a political agreement or coalition. Mohamed had dismissed these claims, suggesting that the relationship between Ruto and Odinga was merely temporary and not a formal partnership.

In contrast, Ruto’s remarks highlighted that no formal coalition had been established between him and Odinga. Instead, Ruto stated that his focus remains on delivering on his 2022 election promises.

The President took the opportunity to celebrate ODM’s 18 years of existence, acknowledging the party’s commitment to representing and advocating for the interests of Kenyans.

He also highlighted the expertise he has recently acquired, including the contributions of John Mbadi and Hasan Joho, as key to advancing his government’s agenda.

Ruto’s address aimed to reinforce his position and clarify any misconceptions about his relationship with ODM.
