On August 20, 2024, a horrific bus accident in Salgaa claimed the lives of 13 people. Peter Omutiti, the Principal of Friends School Mbale High, was among the survivors.

The accident happened at 4 a.m. when a bus traveling from Kisumu to Mombasa reportedly suffered brake failure. This led to a serious crash involving multiple vehicles.

Peter Omutiti was on his way to Mombasa for a high school principals' conference when the accident occurred. He described how lucky he felt to escape alive.

Omutiti shared his experience from a hospital bed, revealing that the bus had previously stopped for repairs in Kericho due to mechanical issues. The bus was stuck there from around 8 p.m. until past midnight as a mechanic worked on it.

Despite the repairs, the bus continued to face problems. As it approached Migaa, near Nakuru, the situation worsened.

The vehicle collided with several other cars, and Omutiti found himself trapped under the wreckage. He was upside down and the bus's engine was leaking oil onto him.

Other survivors of the crash also shared their stories. Rhoda Atieno, who was traveling from Kisumu, said the bus had 71 passengers and had experienced mechanical issues throughout the journey. She mentioned that the bus had not been properly serviced before leaving Mombasa for Kakamega.

Jackson Odera, another survivor, was traveling to Mombasa for work. He described being disoriented immediately after the crash.

The Salgaa area has a history of accidents and is known as a dangerous blackspot. Earlier in May 2024, a similar crash in the area involved a public service vehicle that hit a truck, resulting in five deaths.
