Tensions Escalate in Nairobi as KDF Officers Arrested After Violent Clash with Police

On August 28, 2024, a routine police patrol in Kware, Nairobi, escalated into a violent confrontation involving Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers.

The incident highlights serious issues regarding the conduct of military personnel and their interactions with the local police.

The situation unfolded when a patrol team, which included Duty NCO CPL Lewer and Crime Aide PC(W) Rufo, stopped and detained three KDF members at Cornerstone, Embakasi South.

The KDF officers, identified later as Amos Kipchuba Cheruiyot from the Kenya Air Force and Stephen Muuo Sila from the Kenya Army, were initially apprehended for reasons that remain unclear.

As the officers were being transported to the police station in a patrol vehicle, an unexpected and violent incident occurred.

An intruder, later identified as Evans Kipngetich, suddenly jumped into the vehicle and attacked PC(W) Rufo. The attacker’s aggressive actions led to a struggle between him and the police constable.

During the altercation, Kipngetich tried to grab PC(W) Rufo’s firearm, which caused an accidental discharge of the weapon. The chaotic scene resulted in Kipngetich sustaining a gunshot wound to his right thigh. PC(W) Rufo also suffered injuries, including bruises on her neck and damage to her clothing. Both individuals were taken to Mama Lucy Hospital for medical treatment.

Despite their violent behavior, the KDF officers, including the injured Kipngetich, did not cooperate or provide proper identification when they arrived at the station.

The situation remained tense as the two KDF officers continued to act aggressively even after their arrest. They were eventually subdued and placed in custody.

The police are now conducting an investigation to uncover the motives behind the attack and to assess the behavior of the KDF officers involved.
