Police in Busia County made a significant drug bust involving two high school students. The students, aged 17 and 16, were arrested for possessing a large quantity of bhang, also known as cannabis, with an estimated street value of Ksh.690,000.
The arrest took place at a roadblock on Suo Road, where a multi-agency team led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had set up a checkpoint.
The operation was prompted by a tip-off that led the police to inspect a Guardian Angel bus traveling from Busia to Nairobi.
According to the DCI, the bus was stopped for a routine check. The officers were acting on information that suggested there might be illegal substances on board.
During the search, they discovered five bales of cannabis hidden in the students' bags. The total weight of the seized cannabis was 23 kilograms.
This significant find had a street value estimated at Ksh.690,000, marking a major success in the fight against drug trafficking.
The suspects were identified as a 17-year-old Form Four student and a 16-year-old Form Three student. They were traveling together on the bus when they were intercepted.
Both students were immediately taken into custody and are currently being held at Busia Police Station. They are awaiting arraignment in court, where they will face charges related to drug trafficking.
The arrest has drawn attention to the growing issue of drug involvement among young people. It is troubling to see minors engaged in such serious criminal activities.
The involvement of high school students in drug trafficking raises several concerns, including the effectiveness of current measures to prevent youth from getting involved in illegal activities and the broader impact of drug abuse on young lives.
Authorities have been praised for their swift action and thorough approach in this operation. The multi-agency team involved in the bust included not only DCI officers but also members of other law enforcement agencies.
