A woman’s unexpected scream caused a significant disruption in a dramatic turn during the Senate hearing on Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment.

The woman, later identified as the mother of Daniel Muthiani Bernard, also known as Sniper, created a commotion in the Senate chambers, leading to a halt in the proceedings.

The incident occurred as a lawyer was questioning a witness, Dickson Munene, about the impeachment motion against Mwangaza.

The woman’s scream was so intense that it forced Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to intervene and instruct the house's sergeant-at-arms to handle the disturbance.

Security officers quickly moved towards the source of the noise, but the reasons behind the woman’s outburst remain unclear.

The identity of the woman was confirmed by a source at the Parliament Buildings who disclosed that she was Sniper's mother.

The presence of Sniper’s mother in the Senate chambers was significant because she was there to support her late son’s wife, who was a key witness in the case against Mwangaza.

The impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza began on Monday after the Meru County Assembly approved it. The motion accuses Mwangaza of several serious charges, including gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office.

This is the third time the impeachment motion has reached the Senate. The previous attempts to remove Mwangaza from office were unsuccessful in 2022 and 2023.

As the hearing progressed, Mwangaza, who took the stand on Monday, pleaded not guilty to the charges. She is now waiting for the Senate’s decision, which will come once the voting stage is reached.

The ongoing impeachment motion has drawn significant attention due to its recurring nature and the high stakes involved.

The tragic story of Sniper adds another layer of complexity to the impeachment proceedings. Sniper, a Meru County-based blogger, was found dead in December 2023.

His death shocked many, with suspicions that it was politically motivated. Interior CS Kithure Kindiki revealed that Sniper had been lured into a deadly trap by an aide to Governor Mwangaza.

According to Kindiki, Sniper received a call on December 2, 2023, from someone pretending to arrange a meeting with the governor to resolve differences. Upon arriving in Meru Town, Sniper was abducted and driven to Mutonga River in Tharaka Nithi County.

There, he was killed, and his body was dumped in the river. It was several days before his body was discovered on December 6.

The circumstances of Sniper’s death have fueled speculation about political motives behind the crime. His mother’s emotional outburst during the impeachment hearing reflects the ongoing pain and distress felt by his family.
