Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, has been found guilty of contempt of court after repeatedly ignoring court summons in a high-profile case.

The court had ordered Masengeli to appear for questioning regarding the disappearance of three people in Kitengela. However, he failed to attend six times, leading to frustration and concern from the court and the public.

The case involves the mysterious disappearance of three individuals, which has raised serious concerns about police accountability and the handling of investigations.

The court had issued summonses for Masengeli to clarify certain aspects of the case, but despite being notified multiple times, he did not attend any of the sessions. His absence became a growing issue as the case moved forward.

Masengeli’s legal team defended his absences, stating that he was engaged in urgent police operations in Wajir, which required his full attention. They argued that these operations were critical to national security, and as the head of the police force, Masengeli could not afford to leave his duties to appear in court.

However, the court was not convinced by these reasons. Justice Lawrence Mugambi, who is presiding over the case, ruled that Masengeli’s repeated failure to honor the summonses was a violation of court orders and amounted to contempt of court.

In place of Masengeli, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat appeared before the court on his behalf. Lagat attempted to explain Masengeli’s absence, reiterating that the Acting IG was involved in critical duties.

However, Justice Mugambi made it clear that Masengeli’s personal appearance was necessary, and sending a representative did not satisfy the court’s order. The court’s ruling has sent a strong message about the importance of respecting legal procedures, even for high-ranking officials.

Contempt of court is a serious offense that can lead to significant penalties, including fines or imprisonment. Masengeli’s case highlights the need for all individuals, regardless of their position, to be held accountable when summoned by the court.

The sentencing for Masengeli’s contempt of court charge has been scheduled for Friday. The court will decide on the appropriate punishment for his repeated failure to appear. The sentencing is expected to be a significant moment, as it could set an important precedent regarding how the law treats public officials who disregard court orders.

The case has drawn public attention not only because of Masengeli’s position but also due to the larger issue of the missing persons in Kitengela.

Many in the public and legal community are waiting for answers about the fate of the three individuals, and Masengeli’s failure to cooperate with the court has only heightened concerns.
