Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdulahi has taken a strong stance against High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi after he suspended the six-month jail sentence previously given to Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli.
Ahmednassir argues that Judge Mugambi's decision to suspend the sentence undermines his judicial authority and has led to a situation where Masengeli is openly mocking and criticizing the judge.
In his criticism, Ahmednassir labeled Judge Mugambi’s decision as "cowardly" and accused him of failing to uphold the seriousness of his own ruling. He emphasized that Masengeli’s response to the situation—scolding and laughing at the judge—reflects poorly on the judiciary's credibility.
This development follows a significant incident where Judge Mugambi’s security detail was withdrawn.
The removal of security has triggered a wave of public criticism, particularly from Chief Justice Martha Koome. She has publicly condemned the decision, suggesting that it is linked to the recent sentencing and its suspension.
Ahmednassir has also praised IG Masengeli for clarifying that personal security details are reserved for the President and Deputy President, not for other officials.
This statement by Masengeli has been viewed by some as an attempt to assert his position and justify the withdrawal of Judge Mugambi’s security.
