Azimio Leader Kalonzo Musyoka Sets Sights on 2027 Presidency as Campaign Preparations Underway

Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Party, has announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, marking a notable return to the political spotlight after a 15-year pause.

This announcement comes as Musyoka intensifies his efforts to position himself as the top opposition candidate, following the exit of Raila Odinga from active politics.

In recent weeks, Musyoka has been traveling across Kenya, declaring himself as the new leader of the opposition. This move is part of his broader strategy to consolidate his political base and expand his influence in preparation for the 2027 elections.

Musyoka's renewed focus on the presidency is underscored by significant investments in his campaign infrastructure and outreach.

According to reports, Musyoka is in the process of setting up a new campaign center equipped with advanced technology to support his efforts. This center is intended to serve as the hub for his presidential campaign, helping to coordinate activities and manage communications effectively.

The establishment of this state-of-the-art facility indicates Musyoka’s serious commitment to his 2027 bid.

Musyoka’s campaign strategy involves a nationwide tour aimed at strengthening his political network. He is also working on expanding his connections both locally and internationally to build a robust support system for his candidacy.

This includes efforts to rebrand the Azimio La Umoja coalition, a move intended to present himself as the principal alternative to the current administration led by President William Ruto.

Additionally, Musyoka is focusing on attracting members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) who are dissatisfied with the current government's broad-based approach.

The recent inclusion of Raila Odinga’s allies into President Ruto’s administration has led to discontent among some ODM supporters.

Musyoka is capitalizing on this dissatisfaction to gain support from those who feel marginalized by the current political arrangements.

Despite his proactive approach, Musyoka’s bid has not been without controversy. His claim to have assumed the role of the official opposition leader has been met with resistance from some of Raila Odinga’s close allies.

For instance, Junet Mohamed, the MP for Suna East and a key figure in Odinga’s circle, has challenged Musyoka’s assertion.

Mohamed argues that Musyoka’s role as Minority Leader does not confer upon him the leadership of the opposition, a position he insists remains with him.

This disagreement highlights the ongoing tension within opposition ranks, with different factions vying for influence and leadership.

Musyoka’s efforts to position himself as the leading opposition figure come amid these internal disputes, adding another layer of complexity to the political landscape as Kenya approaches the 2027 elections.
