Dagoretti High School in Nairobi became the center of chaos on Sunday evening after a fight broke out between two groups of students during a basketball match.
The altercation led to 11 students being injured, prompting the deployment of more police officers to the school to restore order.
According to police reports, the fight began after a disagreement arose between two students from different classes—one from Form One and the other from Form Four—during a friendly basketball game. What started as a minor argument quickly spiraled out of control as other students got involved.
The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, with students using sticks and stones to attack each other. The fighting became more intense as two main groups formed:
Sudanese students on one side and Kenyan students on the other. As a result, 11 Sudanese students sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Garden Medical Clinic, where they received treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.
While the initial altercation was centered around the basketball game, tensions grew overnight and took on a more serious religious tone. As violence continued, police were called to the school to prevent further escalation.
The authorities responded quickly, deploying additional officers to the scene to ensure the safety of the students and staff. Despite their efforts, the tension remained high on Monday, leading to even more officers being sent to the school.
Police are closely monitoring the situation, with increased security measures in place to prevent any further incidents. Authorities are working to maintain peace at the school while addressing the concerns of the students and parents.
The incident has raised questions about the need for better conflict resolution mechanisms in schools, as well as the importance of promoting unity among students from different backgrounds.
