Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o Raises Alarm Over Safety Concerns Amid Corruption Exposés

On September 17, 2024, Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o appeared before the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) to address serious concerns about her safety.

Nyakang'o, known for her role in exposing corruption in both national and county governments, revealed that she has been facing threats related to her work.

During her testimony, Nyakang'o disclosed that she feels unsafe while carrying out her duties. She recounted a troubling incident from December last year, when she was arrested under accusations of fraud and operating a Sacco without a license. Nyakang'o believes that these allegations were part of a scheme by unknown individuals to discredit her and remove her from office.

Nyakang'o’s safety concerns are not just about her recent arrest. She revealed that in December, her vehicle was stopped by unknown individuals who wanted her to make a statement in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

She was then abducted and taken on a seven-hour journey from Nairobi to Mombasa. In Mombasa, she was handed over to local Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers and subsequently taken to court. Nyakang'o was released on a Ksh.500,000 cash bail.

Despite these challenges, Nyakang'o expressed determination to continue her work. "Sometimes I feel unsafe, but the law has protected me. I am here to carry out my duties under the law," she said. She stressed that her position is legally protected, and despite the threats and abduction, she remains committed to her role.

In addition to her safety concerns, Nyakang'o highlighted another significant issue: the lack of adequate funding for her office.

She pointed out that while the Auditor-General’s office receives nearly Ksh.9 billion annually, her office is allocated only Ksh.700 million for the entire year.

This discrepancy in funding, Nyakang'o noted, hampers her office’s ability to effectively oversee budgetary matters across the country.

Nyakang'o’s role involves scrutinizing government spending and exposing cases of extravagance and corruption.

Her hard-hitting reports and investigations have often put her in the spotlight and, at times, made her a target for those she seeks to hold accountable.

The Controller of Budget's recent testimony underscores the challenges faced by public officials who work to uphold transparency and accountability.

Despite the threats and insufficient resources, Nyakang'o’s commitment to her role remains steadfast.
