DCI Reveals Details About Missing Boys Before Endarasha Fire

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has shared new details about the tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County on September 5, 2024.

The fire, which started in the boys' dormitory, resulted in the deaths of 21 people. Here’s what we know so far.

Abraham Mugambi, the Central Region Director of Criminal Investigations, announced that the school had 330 students when the third term began on September 3, 2024.

This total included 166 girls and 164 boys. However, Mugambi reported that eight boys were missing from the school that night, meaning only 156 boys were present in the dormitory during the fire.

The blaze caused 19 deaths at the scene. Two additional boys who were taken to the hospital with severe injuries later died, bringing the total death toll to 21. The incident has shocked many and prompted a full-scale investigation to determine how and why the fire occurred.

The DCI is working with several agencies, including fire safety experts, the County Government of Nyeri, and the Ministry of Education, to investigate the fire. Their goal is to discover the cause of the fire and hold those responsible accountable.

To aid in identifying the victims, DNA samples have been collected from the families of those who died. An autopsy on September 12, 2024, will help determine the identities of the victims and assess the extent of their injuries.

Kenya Power has stated that their equipment and network were not involved in the fire. They confirmed that there were no electrical faults on their part at the time of the incident. This statement helps rule out one possible cause of the fire, but the investigation is still ongoing to uncover the real cause.

The DCI has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The community is deeply affected by this tragedy, and there is a strong desire for answers and accountability.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on understanding the full details of what happened and preventing such tragedies in the future. The community and families of the victims are waiting for more information and hoping for justice.
