The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided new information regarding the fire that devastated Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County on September 5, 2024.
The tragic blaze claimed the lives of 21 individuals, and the DCI has been working tirelessly to uncover the details surrounding the incident.
According to Abraham Mugambi, the Central Region Director of Criminal Investigations, the school had a total of 330 students enrolled when the third term began on September 3, 2024.
This number included 166 girls and 164 boys. However, Mugambi revealed that eight boys did not report back to the school, which left 156 boys in the dormitory on the night of the fire.
The fire started in the boys' dormitory, where 19 bodies were found at the scene. Two additional boys who were rushed to the hospital with severe injuries later died, raising the death toll to 21. The tragedy has shocked the community and prompted a comprehensive investigation
The DCI is collaborating with multiple agencies to determine the cause of the fire. This includes working with fire safety experts, the County Government of Nyeri, and the Ministry of Education. The investigation aims to uncover what led to the fire and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
To assist in identifying the victims, DNA samples have been collected from the families of the deceased. The 21 bodies will undergo an autopsy on September 12, 2024, to help in identifying the victims and understanding the extent of the injuries.
Kenya Power has stated that their equipment and network were not at fault. The company confirmed that their systems were intact and that there were no electrical faults that could have caused the fire. This information has helped to rule out one potential cause of the blaze, but the investigation is still ongoing to find out what really happened.
The DCI has promised a thorough investigation and is determined to find out who is responsible for this devastating incident. The tragic loss of young lives has deeply affected the community, and there is a strong desire for justice and answers.
