Diplomats Walk Out as President Ruto Addresses the UN, Sparking Controversy

On September 27, 2024, President William Ruto of Kenya delivered a speech at the United Nations (UN) that drew significant attention after several diplomats reportedly left the hall as he began to speak.

This unexpected move has sparked conversations on various social media platforms in Kenya, with many citizens questioning the reasons behind the diplomats' departure and calling for respect towards African leaders.

The incident took place during a high-profile event where Ruto was set to address global issues and share Kenya's perspectives on international matters.

As he took to the podium, sources indicated that a noticeable number of diplomats began to leave the hall, a gesture that many found disrespectful.

Kenyans online expressed their outrage and disappointment, emphasizing that all leaders, regardless of their country, deserve respect during such international gatherings.
The reactions on social media were swift, with users demanding explanations for the diplomats' actions.

Many argued that leaving during a speech from an African leader sends a negative message about the respect afforded to the continent’s leadership.

The event highlighted ongoing discussions about the treatment of African leaders on the global stage and the need for equitable representation and respect in international forums.

In a separate but related development, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made headlines by asserting that Members of Parliament do not have the power to remove him from office.

Speaking on the current political climate in Kenya, Gachagua stated that he serves at the pleasure of the people of Kenya and not at the behest of Parliament.

He accused some members of the legislature of being bribed in attempts to impeach him, indicating a turbulent political atmosphere.

This statement comes amidst allegations that some of Gachagua’s allies are allegedly funding protests led by Generation-Z groups across the country. These protests have emerged in various regions, highlighting the growing discontent among the youth regarding political and social issues in Kenya.

The Deputy President’s comments reflect the heightened tensions within the government and the ongoing struggles faced by leaders in maintaining their positions amid rising public dissent.
The combination of Ruto's speech at the UN and Gachagua's comments points to a critical moment in Kenyan politics, with leaders facing scrutiny both domestically and internationally.

The incident at the UN may affect how Kenyan leaders are perceived on the global stage, while Gachagua’s statements suggest an ongoing power struggle within the government.
