DP Gachagua Accused of Assaulting Dennis Itumbi During 2022 Election Campaign at State Lodge

On September 17, 2024, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung' wah revealed troubling details about an incident involving Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi.

Ichung' wah, in an interview with Spice FM, recounted an alleged physical confrontation between Gachagua and Itumbi that took place during the 2022 election campaigns.

According to Ichung'wah, the altercation occurred at a State Lodge, where Gachagua reportedly became angry over a tweet posted by Itumbi.

The tweet, which did not meet Gachagua's expectations, led to a heated confrontation. Ichung' wah described how Gachagua allegedly grabbed Itumbi by the collar, threatening him with violence in the presence of President William Ruto.

This incident highlights the tense and sometimes hostile environment within Kenya's political circles.

Ichung' wah expressed disbelief at the behavior of someone in such a high office. He questioned how a Deputy President could react so aggressively over a social media post, suggesting that it reflected poorly on Gachagua's temperament and approach to leadership.

"I don’t know what you would say of a person holding a higher state office," Ichung' wah commented. "Threatening him with physical assault on the basis that someone who had no defined role until recently is not tweeting the things you want him to tweet."

At the time, Itumbi was an influential figure in the Kenya Kwanza campaign, playing a crucial role in President Ruto's rise to power. Ichung' wah painted Gachagua as someone prone to emotional outbursts when things did not go his way.

He cited another example where Gachagua publicly criticized MP Njuguna Kawanjiku, revealing personal details about his dowry and wedding expenses in a derogatory manner.

Ichung' wah also noted that many MPs from the Mt. Kenya region have experienced similar intimidation from Gachagua. He explained that these MPs often live in fear of Gachagua's aggressive tactics, which creates a climate of apprehension and reluctance to speak out.

For instance, he recalled a derogatory remark made by Gachagua towards Baringo MP Florence Jematiah, which stemmed from her association with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

The account of this confrontation underscores concerns about the atmosphere within Kenya's political landscape.

The alleged incident between Gachagua and Itumbi reveals potential issues of violence and intimidation that can affect political dynamics and the safety of individuals involved in public service.

Ichung' wah’s revelations paint a picture of a political environment where high-ranking officials may use their power to intimidate and control others.

This incident raises questions about the conduct of leaders and the impact of their actions on the broader political community.
