DP Gachagua: Ruto Betrayed Me by Involving Raila in Government

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed disappointment over what he calls a betrayal by President William Ruto. Gachagua revealed that he and Ruto had agreed not to include Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), in their government.

According to him, this understanding was based on the belief that Raila’s involvement would cause instability and prevent the government from making progress.

Speaking during a recent interview, Gachagua shared how Ruto had initially convinced him to distance himself from former President Uhuru Kenyatta. At the time, Uhuru had endorsed Raila in the 2022 presidential race.

Gachagua recalled Ruto telling him that Raila was to blame for many of the problems that the previous government faced. Ruto warned that if Raila was allowed to play a role in their administration, it would have negative effects on the country’s future.

Because of this, Gachagua, along with other leaders from Central Kenya, threw their support behind Ruto, believing in his leadership and promises.

However, things have changed. Gachagua now feels betrayed by Ruto’s recent decision to engage Raila in political discussions. This move came after the country witnessed large protests led by the youth, particularly members of Generation Z.

The protests were becoming a major challenge for the government, pushing Ruto to seek a truce with Raila. Gachagua admitted that this decision caught him by surprise, as he did not expect Ruto to break their initial agreement.

Although Gachagua was unhappy with Ruto’s actions, he stated that he eventually decided to support the president’s decision. "He is the boss," Gachagua said, acknowledging that as the Deputy President, his role is to stand by Ruto, even if it means accepting changes to their earlier plans.

In addition to his frustrations with Raila’s involvement, Gachagua mentioned that he approached Ruto about rumors of a possible impeachment.

He shared that Ruto assured him he was not part of the plot. Despite this, Gachagua urged the president to address the growing tensions within their team, especially with some members publicly criticizing him.
