Journalist Kimani Mbugua's Sister Discloses How His Mental Health Issues Have Taken a Toll on Their Mum

Kimani Mbugua, once a rising star in Kenyan journalism, is currently battling serious mental health issues that have deeply affected his family, especially his mother.

Kimani was known for his promising career on Citizen TV, where he made a name for himself as one of the most talented young journalists in the country.

However, in recent years, his mental health has deteriorated, leading to significant challenges for both him and his loved ones.

Kimani's sister, Wanjiku Mbugua, recently spoke in an emotional interview with NTV, where she opened up about the toll her brother’s condition has taken on their family.

During the interview, Wanjiku nearly broke down in tears as she described the pain and confusion their mother is going through. Their mother, who raised Kimani and his siblings in a strong Adventist faith, is struggling to understand what went wrong.

According to Wanjiku, their mother often asks herself difficult questions, wondering what mistakes she might have made and why her son is suffering so much.

The family’s ordeal began a few years ago when Kimani started exhibiting strange and uncharacteristic behaviour.

This change in his personality was difficult for the family to comprehend, especially since Kimani had always been a responsible and dependable eldest child.

Despite being brought up in a loving and supportive environment, Kimani’s mental health began to decline, leading to a series of troubling incidents.

In May 2024, Kimani’s condition worsened to the point where the family had no choice but to seek professional help. Comedian Oga Obinna, a close friend of the family, stepped in to assist, helping them admit Kimani to a rehabilitation centre.

The decision to place Kimani in rehab was not an easy one, but the family recognised that it was a necessary step to ensure his safety and well-being.

Kimani’s father has since revealed that his son is suffering from bipolar disorder, a condition that can cause extreme mood swings and erratic behaviour. Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health condition that requires ongoing treatment and support.

In light of this diagnosis, Kimani’s father has publicly apologised to anyone who may have been hurt by Kimani’s actions, particularly those who were affected by his online videos during his manic episodes.

For the Mbugua family, Kimani’s struggles have been a painful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness. They have had to come to terms with the fact that mental illness can affect anyone, regardless of their background or upbringing.

The family has also had to navigate the stigma associated with mental health issues in their community, which has added another layer of difficulty to their already challenging situation.

Despite the hardships they have faced, Kimani’s family remains hopeful that he will recover with the right treatment and support. They are committed to standing by him as he battles his condition and are doing everything they can to ensure he gets the help he needs.
